Practice forms an important part of our approach to training, whether we’re looking at Difficult Conversations, Confidence in Interviews or Complaint Handling. Giving people a platform to role-play something that is important to them - something they perhaps only have one chance at - is invaluable, especially if they don't have much experience. Being able to 'have a go' in a totally safe, risk-free environment, has a significant impact on confidence.
When it comes to that interview or conversation in real-life, they are safe in the knowledge they’ve already successfully overcome this challenge - they can recreate behaviours that worked, dismiss answers that didn’t come out right and relax knowing they’ve handled this situation before so can absolutely do it again. Importantly, in the real-situation, there is likely to be more emotions at play and so having a plan, and having practiced that plan, will make it easier to stay focused when emotions are involved.
These kind of results come from practice - in small groups of two-four, where the situation has been thought about, the objectives are clear and the environment is comfortable. Then discuss the experience after, identifying what worked well and what could be improved upon. This is quite the opposite from asking two people to role-play a difficult conversation in front of a room of colleagues. Practice helps individuals to develop and learn from each other because they’re not self-aware or thinking they must entertain the group.
If you have an important interaction coming up, consider investing the time to practice beforehand. You could do this with friend or colleague, it works especially well if there’s a situation they’d like to practice too - so it’s mutually beneficial. It’s important to get clear on the situation and intended outcomes.
