Our Challenge

The team at St George’s Trust in London were looking at running sessions as part of their staff engagement program which has been created to develop and support leaders. They wanted an experiential programme around Interviewing with Impact to develop the confidence of employees interviewing for roles internally. Along with interview techniques and preparation, they wanted the sessions to focus on presentation skills, body language and voice.

The Different Duck Approach

Before designing this workshop we asked delegates to complete a questionnaire to find out specific challenges they faced during the interview process. We created a series of day-long workshops that would provide participants with practical skills to take forward into the interview process and gave them the chance to put these skills into practice using role-play.

We started the session by performing a live case-study of an interview using Forum Theatre, in which the group identified areas for improvement and made specific changes to the characters' behaviour to create a successful outcome. We explored theory using practical exercises and facilitated discussion with an in-depth exploration of the impact of body language, voice and breathing techniques.

The session included a Practice Presentation, an important part of the interview process, with feedback on any areas for improvement. Participants also took part in a Mock Interview where they had the chance to play the interviewee and interviewer, experiencing both perspectives and received actionable feedback from their Mock Interview.

The Different Duck Difference

The chance to practice in a safe environment provided a valuable opportunity for participants. Importantly the workshops changed mindsets towards interviews and 100% of participants agreed their confidence in interviews had improved from taking part in the workshop.

"This course has really improved my confidence in interviewing and has really helped brush up on my skills. Can’t wait for my next interview!”

"I hate role-play in training, I find them awkward and embarrassing and I was really dreading the scenarios where role-play was included. However, you completely disarmed me! I didn't feel uncomfortable, I actually enjoyed it and will use some of your exercises in my role as a trainer as well. Well done, this was completely new for me - you really turned role-play on its head for me and have opened my mind to it!”

“The practical exercises allowed me to put into practice what had been taught. A great, interactive workshop!”

Our Challenge

HFMA promote the best practice and innovation in financial management and leadership across the UK health economy through local and national networks. They offer healthcare finance professionals practical resources, insightful thought leadership, support and personal growth.

In order to ensure they were interacting with delegates to provide the best possible innovation in financial management, HFMA approached Different Duck to work with the events team on maximising personal impact.

The Different Duck Approach
The Different Duck Approach

We carried out research and facilitated focus discussions with HFMA to establish the type of challenges the events team experience. We were able to recreate some of these specific situations using Forum Theatre. We facilitated discussion to enable participants to identify the areas in which they wanted to improve their personal impact. Through play and personalised feedback, they were also able to identify the specific behavioural skills they needed to develop in order to achieve the desired impact and were given accessible tools to improve those skills. We then created a safe and collaborative environment in which participants could practice these challenging situations.

The team left with a toolkit of applicable skills to draw upon when faced with challenges, which led to an increase in resilience in difficult situations. The workshop had a positive impact on the team dynamic, boosting confidence and helping them to support each other through challenges situations.

""The interactive, informal approach really helped me overcome my main sticking points, I just wish the workshop was longer!" Delegate

Vorwerk

Our Challenge

Vorwerk asked us to create an experiential training programme to help employees handle Difficult Conversations. We worked with them to develop a tailored session based on the types of challenging conversations and their work culture. Our pre-workshop research identified specific problem areas delegates would like to improve and we were able to incorporate these into our live case studies.

The Different Duck Approach

We started our design by carrying out a survey within the team to identify specific challenges, so the scenarios we recreated could be of maximum relevance. We began the workshop by exploring mindset and the benefits in seeing a difficult conversation as an opportunity. We prepared live case studies based around the challenges the team faced, they got to understand the characters and their back-stories before witnessing the difficult conversation. We used these scenes as a foundation for discussion and then found ways to improve the characters' behaviour to achieve a positive outcome. Over the course of the day we also looked at preparation, identifying outcomes, communication (verbal and non-verbal) and personality types. We explored a structure to apply to difficult conversations and then put this all into practice using various practical exercises. The session finished with a role-play assessment, on which individuals received feedback.

The Different Duck Difference

“Different Duck recently ran a training session on successfully handling difficult conversations. The session was written bespoke to meet our learning objectives, including case studies and role-play scenarios to reflect our working culture. They delivered a powerful, engaging session which enabled my team to overcome specific personal challenges using role-play. The team left feeling empowered to embrace important conversations in the workplace and equipped with the necessary skills to do so.”

Workplace Newham

Our Challenge

Workplace helps local businesses to recruit skilled staff and provide Newham residents with the necessary support and advice to succeed. They also provide a comprehensive work-related training programme to local residents. Workplace asked Different Duck to run a training session to improve participant’s confidence in interview situations.

The Different Duck Approach

We worked with Workplace to develop an interactive, practical workshop that would stand out from other ‘classroom’ styles of training. Our experiential approach provided a platform, for delegates at various stages in their careers and with varying levels of interview experience, to share successes and learn from one another. We used Forum Theatre for the group to identify common pitfalls, suggest behavioural changes and see the impact of those changes. We explored body language and vocal techniques that delegates could use within an interview then used role-play for delegates to put this into practice. By creating an environment in which individuals could comfortably discuss ideas, solutions and experiences, participants worked together to develop individual strategies to use when approaching future interviews.

The Different Duck Difference

All participants reported increased confidence from the workshop. They left with the experience of a successful interview, as well as the experience of overcoming specific individual challenges and a practical strategy for their next interview.

"The workshop was so helpful, I developed some great skills and it really improved my confidence. I would definitely recommend it and can't wait to come again! An excellent training session, the trainers were brilliant. It gave me a lot to think about!" Delegate, Workplace Newham
